Dreaming of Flying

Wanting to stay, wanting to go
a bird sits in its nest
tasting the crisp air wishing
it could spread its wings and fly
off to distant lands, but it won't;
the little hungry beaks are open
expecting to be taken care of;
the bird will not leave, will not soar
and follow the desire to fly away;
the bird finally leaves the nest only
to return with the day's meal knowing
that this is how it is supposed to be;
she warms herself next to the little ones
and is thankful for the sunshine on her wings.
